About the artist
Sylvia Johnston

Sylvia Johnston is a Devon artist whose work moves between landscape, seascape and semi-abstract painting. Inspired by the South Devon coast, rivers, changing weather, evening light and natural forms, she works intuitively with oil and cold wax, acrylic, mixed media and watercolour.
Her paintings are built through layering, blending, scraping, scratching and mark-making, allowing texture and atmosphere to develop as the work evolves. Some pieces remain recognisably rooted in place, such as the River Bovey or a changing shoreline, while others become more abstract explorations of colour, contrast and surface.
Sylvia's work has been shown in local exhibitions, including the Thelma Hulbert Open Exhibition in Honiton and Exmouth Art Group exhibitions. She continues to experiment with materials and approaches while returning to the landscapes and light of Devon as a recurring source of inspiration.
